The Poitou Charentes is location on the western coast of France. Its climate has a microclimate similar to the south of France so lovely sunny summers and mild winters. As you travel east it can be colder in winter!

It has a long history and the Roman relics at Saintes (especially) are worth a visit – check out the amphitheatre!

Poitou-Charentes Tradition and Culture

Quite a rural area away from the coast so the farming traditions and strong with market towns and rural communities. Typical France with lots of lovely village, boulangeries and village cafes.

Poitou Charentes attractions: on the coast there are many superb beaches – great long sandy beaches. In the north, the lovely port of La Rochelle, and to the south the Gironde estuary. Make sure you visit Royan.

The economy of Poitou Charentes is driven by tourism especially on the coast, and agriculture inland. Cognac and derivative drinks plus many vineyards contribute significantly to the local economy.

House prices – on the coast expensive; inland cheaper especially away from major towns such as Saintes, Poitiers, and Cognac. Check out a great selection: Poitou-Charentes property.

Places to visit in Poitou Charentes

La Rochelle, le port à la tombée de la nuitPoitou Charentes has much to offer the visitor – almost anytime of the year. It has a mild winter climate and lovely hot sunny summers. Although many tend to visit the coast in the summer, there is much to enjoy and see inland.

Visitors to Poitou Charentes

Royan BeachOn the coast, we would recommend La Rochelle and Royan (although we have a soft spot for Saint Georges de Didonne). The old port at La Rochelle is a delight. Although there are many sandy beaches along this coast, the big expanse at Royan is a treat for the kids. We have spent many a picnic on the banks at Talmont sur Gironde and stroll through the village to see the local arts & crafts.

Roman Architecture in Poitou Charentes

CognacInland, you must take in the roman architecture of Saintes and especially the Amphitheatre. Stroll along the river banks of the Charente. Cognac is worth exploring – with some very interesting tours of the various Cognac manufacturers. If you fancy a swim in the river – drive onto Jarnac.
